Stargazer Comments: A Community that Cares Dec 10 2003 4:40PM
As the end of the year draws close, like many of you, I tend to take stock of what I have achieved this year. I think about my professional achievements, of course, but I also contemplate family moments and times when I reached out beyond my immediate circle to the greater community to give something to others. I take time to reflect on how lucky I am both with my incredible work environment and my wonderful family and hope that I am sharing some of my heart with others.

In looking back at the year with respect to the Ultima Online community, I see so many shining moments. I remember the time when one of our board hosts reached out to save a player who was having a rough time. I think about all the stories of people helping people in-game. I think back with pride on the players who contributed to special charities and reached out to others in need. And, finally, I think about the in-game tributes for those extra-special people we have lost. I feel really lucky to be a part of such a diverse and devoted community, and on behalf of Origin and EA I want to thank all of you for making UO the warm and welcoming world it is. If communities like ours are the future of online, then the future looks bright!

In closing, I would like to say that there are some fun ways to thank those who have helped you out in-game, put a smile on a Guild mate’s face or just surprise someone with some UO cheer. This year, for the first time ever, we are offering a program called UO Gift of Giving, which will allow you to purchase a Game Time code for a friend and give it to them via an in-game holiday greeting. We are also creating a holiday-themed Magic Moments event. We just sent out Anniversary registration codes to all active opt-in players to share with friends and loved ones, offering those significant others a chance to join you in UO and see our community of friends firsthand (By the way, more UO boxes will be hitting retail shelves any day now — just in time for the holidays!). So, gather round the PC, decorate your virtual house with some great new gifts you will soon be receiving, and celebrate being part of the greatest community online!

You can be sure that we have lots of great surprises planned for you next year that should give you all good cheer! So take a moment this holiday season to share some virtual goodwill and be thankful for everything you have, including your friends in UO!

Happy Holidays!

As UO nears its fourth birthday, which is an amazing feat for a game that was only supposed to last one year and garner less than 50,000 players, we are focusing more on what got us to this point and how we can keep the game exciting for another four years (at least!). Specifically, we are thinking about what our players want from us as a committed company and how we can keep both the in-game and community experience thriving.

To that end, we are looking to conduct a number of focus groups and online surveys this year, and solicit the feedback from our players on what their needs are within a number of areas - so look for those in your email box if you have opt-in status. We understand that some players have felt that their feedback has gone unheard, but the truth is that it is more likely used much more than you might think! We do hear and implement individual player feedback, but often in a subtle way that integrates other ideas as well. We also want to bring our community more into the forefront of our thoughts and deeds by re-invigorating the website, and adding some new promotional content, thereby providing opportunities for our players to have some fun while visiting the site and maybe win some UO goodies as well. Additionally, we are looking at ways to promote exciting events and player stories within and across shards, as well as enhance our tips and tricks related information to enable more of you to gain insight on how to prosper in Britannia.

Finally, we are considering hosting another UO World Faire. There was a strong turnout last year and we received a lot of great feedback on how to improve on the original model. It is not a “sure thing” but we are keeping our fingers crossed that we can make it happen. So, if you have any thoughts on the Fan Event front, be sure to bring them up on the UO Fan Events and Luncheons or the Discussions Board; we would love to hear them.

Our goal this year is to focus on our most valuable asset - You, our customer. So, don’t be shy - use the Boards and let us know how we can improve your game-play experience and your website experience. And, when and if you meet us at the Fan Event, hey, maybe we can sip some ale and you can tell us how we're doing!

Hello from the web team! We have been busy working on several unreleased projects, and what you have seen, like registration forms for the UO Faire or for the UO3D beta, are just not that exciting. Today we finally have more cool web stuff to show off.

We are happy to announce the release of online faction rankings. You can find the pages at http://town.uo.com/factions/. We now rank faction guilds and individual faction members based on kill points, by faction, by shard, and overall.

Faction membership and kill points are also now indicated on MyUO paperdolls, character pages, and guild pages. Membership and rankings are updated daily.

We hope this will bring even more enjoyment to the faction system by showcasing the best PvP guilds and players in Ultima Online today.

Keep an eye out for additions to the factions pages in the future. We’ve got more new stuff in the works.

If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions regarding web features, please email me at www@uo.com.

It’s been a busy couple months for us in the web group. We have added close to one million characters to our MyUO web database. You can now see the actual paper dolls of every character in UO which was logged in within the past thirty days. These characters are updated once per night.

If you have a MyUO account you can log in to the web site and see most of the information about your personal characters including skills, stats, and short term murder count. You can also choose to turn on public display of your character stat page, so others can see information about your character.

We have also added MyUO support to the Japanese site at www.jp.uo.com. The Japanese site is a complete mirror of the English site. It contains all of the same features as the US site, and is updated daily.

Additionally, we have added a New Player Center in 6 languages for people who are just starting out in the game. If you are new to UO, you can visit www.uo.com/newplayer/ for tips and rules to get started.

Finally, the Town Cryer was revamped into the new BNN Newspaper. You can find out the happenings throughout the land at http://town.uo.com/bnn.

We have plans for many new features to be added to the site, to further enhanced the Ultima Online experience. So keep your eyes open!

As usual, if you have any issues, comments, or suggestions regarding UO.COM or MyUO, please feel free to write to me at webmaster@uo.com.

Thanks and enjoy!

Greetings. You may have noticed some changes to the official web site recently. We have just completed the first phase of MyUO. We have added several new personalization and accessibility tools to help you get the information you want and need, as quickly as possible.

MyUO Personalization – If you have visited http://my.uo.com, you have noticed that you are now able to customize your MyUO home page with the information you wish to see from the site. The display of your home page is based on a time increment that you set. If any pages are added or modified inside of your personalized criteria and the time increment, they will be displayed on your home page. This is only the first thing that your MyUO login will be good for. There are many more features to come. From now on, instead of going to www.uo.com, you can go to http://my.uo.com for your own personalized access!

Search – Each page now has a simple search field at the top. The simple search gives you instant access to the 250 static pages in the site, as well as all dynamic news, development cycle, and comments pages.

Modified design – The most obvious feature is probably the new header that you see at the top of each page. The headers represent a move to a lighter design which allows the pages to load faster. Each section caches its header and other shared files to your browser, so that you do not have to continue to download the shared code for each page you view.

We are now beginning the second phase of MyUO which should bring many more UO information, community, and personalization features to a browser near you. If you have any suggestions for things you would like to see on the website or comments on the existing features of MyUO, please feel free to send them to me at webmaster@uo.com.

Thanks and enjoy,

Warhau
