Internet/Shard Issues

he Internet is an often unpredictable beast, with outages and technical problems occurring somewhere in the world on a daily basis. We will be posting known issues and events on this page in order to keep you informed of problems that may affect the performance of Ultima Online.

The Atlantic shard is back up and should be fine. We
thank you for your patience.

October 27th, 1998

9:52am

The Atlantic shard had an unexpected crash this morning. We
will be keeping down this shard to do some extended maintenance,
but we expect it to be up within two hours.

October 25th, 1998

9:37pm

We are experiencing some techinical issues that are preventing logins to many of the servers. The servers are still up and running, but people who log out of the servers or lose connection are not able to log back in.

You may also experience some difficulties even getting to the login list for awhile as the login servers are getting hit by everyone who logs out and is repeatedly attempting to log back in.

We have our network team working on the issue and will have it corrected as quickly as possible. Thanks for your patience.

4:32pm

The Altantic shard is back up now and everything appears to be working perfectly. Thanks for your patience.

2:23pm

The Atlantic shard is experiencing some technical difficulties. We are working on the issue and will have it back up as quickly as possible. We do not have an estimated time of when it will be back up. Thanks for your patience while we work through this issue.

October 24th, 1998

11:23pm

The Catskills shard has been functioning normally for some time now and everything appears to be back in order with the shard.

1:17pm

We are currently experiencing technical difficulties
with the Catskills shard. We are working on resotring
it so that you will be able to play on it soon. Currently,
however, there is no ETA. We will try to keep you
updated when we know more.

October 23rd, 1998

10:00pm

We will not be taking down all the servers as earlier reported, but the extra maintenance times will still be in effect.

9:58pm

We will not be taking down the servers as earlier reported.

8:27pm

We will be bringing down and restarting all the worlds one by one this evening. We will wait to bring them down until they have completed a backup so that the timewarp is minimal. Also, we will bring them down a few at a time so that if your usual server is down, you will still have alternate servers to play on. When a server goes down, it should be about one hour before it is back up.

Also, the Yamato and Asuka servers will be down for a few extra hours after their maintenance period today for some technical adjustments. The Lake Superior server will also be down for a few extra hours of maintenance during its regular maintenance time at about 11:00AM Central Daylight Time on Saturday, October 24.

Thank you for your patience.

6:19pm

Great Lakes has been up and running for awhile now and everything appears to be working properly. We have been monitoring the server and everything looks good. Thank you for your patience while we worked through this issue.

We have technicians working on the server and will have it back up as quickly as possible, but we do not have an estimate on how long the issue will take to resolve. Thanks for your understanding.

October 21st, 1998

10:55pm

The Catskills and Atlantic shard are taking longer than expected to work on. We are still working on those two servers and thank you for your patience.

3:33pm

The West and East Coast shards will be going down shortly to prepare the shards for the Second Age. They will be down for around a 2 hour maintenance period. Thank you for your patience.

2:56pm

We are currently experiencing technical difficulties with the Yamato shard. We are working on the situation and apologize for any inconvenience.

October 14th, 1998

10:03am

We will be publishing the latest update to the
public servers today. In order to minimize downtime,
we will be not be doing the standard daily maintenance
at 10am. Instead, we will publish to Great Lakes starting
at noon (Central). We will assess the state of the update
on Great lakes before proceeding with updating the other
servers. The regular daily maintenance will be done
alongside the publish.

October 11th, 1998

3:47pm

Some players have reported that their game performance on the Lake Superior shard seems slow. We are examining this issue to see if we can find anything that would be affecting play. This examination will continue into this upcoming week. Thanks to those who have reported this to us.

October 9th, 1998

9:06pm

Currently, many players are reporting difficulties logging into the game. Our servers and login controls are all running fine and we and many other players are able to log in and out of the shards, but there is an extremely low number of players on most of the shards.

We are contacting the appropriate internet personel to attempt to track down this issue. Thanks for reporting the issue so that we can help with the diagnosis of the problem. You may experience some difficulties logging into all shards for the next few hours.

3:46pm

We are examining the Sonoma server for some technical difficulties. This means the server may be up and down for the next few hours. We apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for working with us through this issue.

October 7th, 1998

11:10pm

We have discovered an unforseen issue with the recent stat fix that was administered earlier this evening. The nature of this issue could affect proper backup completion. Due to this unfortunate complication, we are temporarily removing all the fixes that were introduced today and we are forced to restore the game to the state it was before the patch. We apologize for any inconvenience.

10:26pm

We are currently experiencing some unexpected server downtimes. We are working on the situation and apologize for any inconvenience.

4:51pm

The mini-patch to Lake Superior has been implemented and it is now ready to be published to the rest of the shards. They will each be rebooted according to region. We thank you for your patience.

For more information on this mini-patch, please visit the Update Center.

It appears that Worldcom has had a fiber cut near Atlanta that is
affecting cities in Florida. Among others, Digex' POP in Jacksonville
has lost connectivity to some of their subscribers.

October 1st, 1998

3:58pm

***ATTENTION PATCH INFORMATION***

We wanted to keep the players informed on today's patch situation and schedule. This following schedule is accurate if no update problems arise.

The first step is that we will publish the update to Great Lakes. We will be looking over Great Lakes at this time, which means that it will not be available to the public. This should be the case for about an hour. If no major issues arise, then we will continue.

The second step will be to publish the client changes to everyone, and to make Great Lakes available to the public. Because of the client change, no other server will be available during this time. We will be monitoring the GM call queues for any problems. We will continue to do so for about an hour. If there are no major problems, then we will continue.

The final step will be to publish the update to all of the shards, and make them available to the public.

We hope that you understand why we must proceed with such caution, and we appreciate your patience.

September 25th, 1998

8:03pm

We will be restarting all of the servers a few shards at a time. The server should take around one to two hours to be back up from the time that it shuts down.

We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you.

4:40pm

We are currently experiencing some technical difficulties with the Atlantic, Chesapeake, Baja, and Sonoma shards. We are aware of the issues and are working to fix them as quickly as possible. Thanks for your patience.

8:11pm

We are currently experiencing some technical difficulties with the Great Lakes shard. We are working on the situation and apologize for any inconvenience.

September 20th, 1998

6:52pm

We were experiencing some network problems that were effecting the login servers and our internet connections for the last few hours. These problems prevented many users from connecting to the game, and removed our Game Masters from all shards. This also prevented us from updating our patch message and web site, and we apologize for the lack of news.

We are still working on the issue, but have the login issue resolved, and we have most of the Game Masters back on their shards. We will continue to work on this issue until all Game Masters are back in their respective worlds.

Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience this caused.

September 18th, 1998

5:46am

The Lake Superior shard has been up for several hours now and the decay fix appears to have worked perfectly. Again, we apologize for the large time warp and thank the Lake Superior players for understanding that it was needed to fix the item decay. Thanks again for helping us track down and solve this issue.

September 17th, 1998

5:19pm

Yesterday during the patch update, the Lake Superior shard experienced an abnormal decay of items. We have tracked the problem down and are reverting to a backup taken just before the patch update.

The bad news is that the shard will experience about a 24 hour timewarp back to yesterday, however, the very, very good news is that the items will return and the decay should be fixed.

We truly apologize for this large loss of time and any inconvienience it will cause Lake Superior players. Thank you again for your great understanding and help in tracking down this issue.

1:20am

We experienced a power outage at the Origin building that disabled some of the login servers and prevented our ability to post news of what was going on. Sorry to keep you all in the dark. (Couldn't resist that pun) :)

At any rate, all the machines seem to be returning online and the client and server patch appears to be in perfect working order. We apologize for the login difficulties and any other inconvieniences from the situation. Great Lakes also had to be rebooted during the power outage and is now on its way back up.

Thanks again for bearing with us during this issue.

September 16th, 1998

9:18pm

- PATCH UPDATE -

Everything in the patch appears to be running smoothly. We do need to take Chesapeake and Lake Superior back down for some internal tweaking. They will probably be down for a few hours. We apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience.

6:27pm

Great Lakes checks out and the next two worlds to startup will be Atlantic and Lake Superior. These worlds should be active in the next few hours.

After examining those worlds, the remainder of the worlds will be brought back online. Thank you again for your patience during this patch publish. We hope to have all worlds active and online in the next few hours.

4:32pm

The patch is almost ready to be put on all the worlds. We will be bringing down all shards and putting Great Lakes up with the patch. We will be monitoring Great Lakes and then we will bring all other worlds back up with the new patch after a short period of time. Thanks again for your patience.

The patch servers will be extremely overstressed for awhile, so we would recommend giving the game a few hours before attempting to re-login to any world other than Great Lakes. All other worlds will be unavailable for play for a few hours while they are being patched.

2:13pm

Great Lakes is getting the new patch right now, and as a result will be taking a little longer than normal to return from its maintenance period.

We apologize for the delay and we will have Great Lakes back up as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

September 14th, 1998

3:44pm

We will be bringing down the Napa Valley shard to perform some extended maintenance. We thank you for your patience and apologize for any inconvenience.

The appropriate internet personel have been notified and are looking into the issue. Thanks for your patience while we work through this issue.

West coast server players may also experience some difficulties on the Baja, Napa Valley, Sonoma and Pacific shards starting around 1:00 Pacific time as those servers undergo some extra routine maintenance, as well.

We will keep the maintenance period as short as possible and thank you for bearing with us while this is taken care of.

August 28th, 1998

8:36am

************* August 28, 1998 8:30am *************
An update is scheduled to go in next week which will address
several issues in the game.
1) It is very important to note that all items will
now have at least one unit of height, except for floors
and carpets. This means that stacks of items in a single tile
will stack up vertically, and excess items in the stack at the
time of the update will vanish.
2) The limit on number of items in a container will apply to bank
boxes, including the number of stacks of gold. In other words,
having many small stacks of gold in your bank box will take up
space, and will fill up your bank box. Excess items may vanish!
Be sure you have only the normal amount of items allowable for a
container in your bankbox!
3) All vendors not attached to houses should vanish. The limit of
one vendor per house will be applied retroactively. This means that
if you have more than one vendor per house, the older of the two
will vanish.
More information is available at the Update center on owo.com.
